About The Warehouse Theatre

Callison Hopkins doesn't know life without theatre. Since she was in preschool, she's participated in school and university productions. She eventually became an award-winning professional director and assistant director in local schools and community theatres and began working as a private acting coach.

Callison has directed and assistant directed a variety of theatre productions, including Little Women, The Game's Afoot, Matilda, Steel Magnolias, Seussical, and many more. She has also led and directed numerous summer theatre conservatories and camps.

Why Start a Community Theatre

"When I was younger, it was difficult to find my place in a small theatre scene full of big musicals. It felt like the same people got the roles over and over and there wasn't room for me. I just want everyone to know: there is a place for you in theatre. And everyone's role, from actor to stage manager to choreographer to theatre tech, is essential."

It was in college when Callison discovered her talent for and confidence in theatre. Through a director's encouragement, and her college theatre community's warmth, support, and honest – yet kind – feedback, her creativity, confidence, and talent grew significantly. Now, she's passionate about creating this type of inclusive artistic space in Desoto County.

The Planting of a Seed

"A few years ago, in passing, a realtor friend said, 'That trucking warehouse over there used to be for sale. You could just buy that for a theatre!' He laughed when he said it, but that comment has stuck with me since then," says Callison.

In that moment, a seed was planted, and it's grown into what is now The Warehouse Theatre.

Plans for The Warehouse Theatre

"Obviously, we don’t have the physical warehouse yet," she laughs. "Our first step is to start with theatre programming and stage productions." To get started, in the fall of 2023, The Warehouse Theatre is rolling out three intensives for various age groups.

"The goal is to eventually purchase a warehouse to use for rehearsals, classes, workshops, productions, and rental space for events, parties, and receptions," Callison explains.

The Bigger Picture

The Warehouse Theatre was founded on the belief that theatre is a transformative art for both the participants and the audience. With that in mind, Callison and her team are building an undeniable atmosphere of empathy, love, and unity that cascades into the larger community.
